GIANT GOLDEN CROWN FLYING FOX – ONLY IN THE PHILIPPINES
I do not know if this image is legit or not but this is believe to be the Giant golden-crowned flying fox (Acerodon jubatus) or is famously know as the Golden-capped fruit bat. It got its name because of the golden fur around its head which is in sharp contrast to its black body. It is a rare megabat and can only be found in the forests of the Philippines. This megabat have been seen on the islands of Bohol, Boracay, Cebu, Leyte, Luzon, Mindanao, Mindoro, Negros and Polillo.
This bat is one of biggest bats in the world and it has a wingspan of wingspan of 1.5–1.7 m (4 ft 10 in–5 ft 7 in) and weighing 0.7–1.2 kg (1.5–2.6 lb). Looking at the image, the bat hanging looks like twice the size of the normal Giant golden-crowned flying fox. So I am having doubts on the accuracy of the image.
It is an amazing bat plus the factor that it is endemic here in the Philippines but it is the category of endangered and could be extinct if not attended by the Philippine government. It is considered extinct because of rampant forest destruction across the country.
If you have any news or update regarding this kind of bats and if they are being attended by the Philippine government please share it with us. If non, you could share the knowledge for everyone to be aware of the existence of the Golden-capped fruit bat. If you want to learn more about this beautiful bat, check out its Wiki Page.
